Hosepipe Bans To Remain In Force

Despite the recent healthy spate in downpours after an unusually dry winter, homeowners are being advised that hosepipe bans restrictions are set to remain in place for the rest of the year. Secretary for the Environment Caroline Spelman has advised that due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, hosepipe bans will continue until we experience a wet winter.

This follows news that the House of Lords has recommended that water bills rise as a consequence of the widespread water shortages we face in the UK. So ultimately it means that UK homeowners will have no other choice but to lower their water consumption.

Here a few ways you can do it:

  • Collect rainwater and use it for watering your garden
  • Turn off the tap whilst brushing your teeth
  • Cut down on the number of baths you have and limit the amount of time you spend in the shower
  • When washing dishes or having a shave, only fill the sink with as much water as you need
  • Don’t overfill your kettle when making a cup of tea or coffee
  • As you wait for water to turn hot, collect and store the cold water generated
  • Instead of waiting for water to turn ice-cold, fill up a bottle and place it in the fridge
  • Only flush the toilet as and when you need to
  • Re-use bath water with other family members
  • Always make sure that all taps are properly turned off as a dripping tap consumes water
