Room-by-Room

Bathroom

Bathroom windows tend to be on the smaller side, retaining the privacy of users while letting in light.

Living Room

You generally find the largest windows in living rooms to maximise light capture and convert them into beautifully open and inviting locations.

Kitchen

Kitchen windows usually get installed higher, such as above a sink, and have a shorter height. If you have an open-plan kitchen-diner, attracting abundant light is vital.

Bedroom

A home’s layout and style will govern bedroom window sizes. Employ a large feature window in your bedroom to wake up to a bright space or keep openings to minimum if you want a more restful resting chamber.

Standard Sizes By Window Material

The chosen window material will be a factor in standard window sizes and also determine the level of design flexibility.

UPVCReplacement windows crafted from UPVC mostly conform to standard sizes, a reasoning for their popularity, as is the affordability of UPVC frames. Standard UPVC window sizes and the dimensions of them generally align with window openings, ensuring seamless installation.

Timber – Occupants of period homes and in conservation areas will often look to bespoke-made timber windows as replacements. When tailored design is involved, standard sizing may not be applicable.

Aluminium – Despite being one of earth’s most robust materials, aluminium is extremely malleable, which is how ultra-slim aluminium windows can be fashioned. For particularly wide or tall windows, prioritise aluminium openings.

How To Correctly Measure Windows

If replacing your windows is something you’re thinking about at the moment, it’s useful for you to know how to measure up for your windows and get the right sizes. Adhere to our step-by-step instructions.

Measure from the outside

Head outside of the house with your tape measure as that’s how you will get more precise measurements than you would if you did it from inside.

Take three measurements

Glean the width of the window by measuring across in three separate places – the top, middle and bottom. Do similar to get the height – from the left side, centre and right side. You’re then unlikely to miss any irregularities in the wall or framework.

Check for squareness

You need window openings to be square. Figuring that out requires you to measure diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. Near-matching measurements indicate that an opening is square. If they’re very different, you’re advised to bring it up with your installer.

Allow for fitting tolerance

You must account for some fitting tolerance when you are measuring up for the best coloured UPVC windows. Take 5-10mm off the width and height measurements so that there’s space for an installer to adjust and fit the replacement frames.
