Eden’s Energy Saving Guide

Eden’s Energy Saving Guide

The cost of energy is on everyone’s minds right now, with many households concerned how they are going to afford to heat their homes this winter.

Former Prime Minister, Liz Truss, recently announced a plan to help with the extortionate cost of energy, capping the price of energy at £2,500 a year for a household that uses an average amount of energy.

There is no denying that your energy bills will be lower than they would have been without this announcement, with Which? estimating that the plan will save homeowners an average of £1000 per year. However, for many households, this does not go far enough.

The cost of energy has still risen significantly. Which? estimates that the new average unit rates (for direct debit customers) will be 34p per kWh for electricity with an average standing charge of 46p per day and 10.3p per kWh for gas with an average standing charge of 28p per day.

Many households are scrambling to reduce their energy costs, searching for a cheaper tariff and looking for ways to lower their energy usage. Eden has put together some advice on how to save energy.

Take shorter showers

Did you know that reducing your showers by just 2 minutes can save a significant amount of energy each year?

It is recommended that the ideal shower length is 5 to 10 minutes long for a body shower. Set a timer or put together a 7-minute playlist so you don’t go over the time.

Dry your washing on a line outside

We have seen very little rain this summer and let’s cross our fingers that it continues! As tumble dryers are one of the most energy-intensive household items, Eden recommends drying your clothes outside instead.

Moreover, avoid drying your clothes on radiators as this could mean they will need to work harder to heat your home. It could also increase the condensation on your windows. Clearly, the best way to dry your clothes is by hanging them outside – it saves energy, money and benefits the health of your home.

Invest in energy-efficient windows & doors

Poorly insulated windows and doors play a big part in high energy costs, as the warmth from your heating system will escape through gaps in the frame.

Replacing your ageing windows and doors with energy-efficient alternatives will help save you money in heating bills, in addition to creating a more comfortably warm home throughout the year. With Eden’s high-performance glazing and frames, the thermal efficiency of your home will be transformed.
