4 Ways You Can Prep Your Home For Winter

After such a prolonged spell of amazingly hot weather this summer it is impossible to not notice that temperatures have dipped a little, a subtle sign that winter isn’t too far away.

This should serve as a reminder to you to check that your home is fully energy efficient before it arrives, otherwise you could be forced into layering up and cosying up to your loved ones indoors.

While having a hug is always enjoyable, so that you don’t have to resort to such measures, winter-proof the place now with our top 4 winter-proofing tips.

  1. Replace your old windows and doors

The average home loses 10% of its heat through windows and doors, potentially more if the windows and doors are single glazed. Fitting new double or triple glazed windows and doors will significantly minimise heat loss and heighten thermal efficiency, keeping draughts out of the house. The thermal properties of UPVC, aluminium and our composite doors are also much higher than ageing wood.

  1. Get your boiler serviced

You should have your boiler serviced by a qualified engineer on a yearly basis at the very least as a thorough service will identify any problems with your boiler. It’s much better to uncover any problems now rather than your boiler breakdown in the middle of winter and leave you without warmth and hot water when you need it most. Financially, it may prove worthwhile replacing your old boiler for a more energy efficient replacement.

  1. Bleed your radiators

Before you go ahead and replace your boiler, check that any lack of warmth isn’t due to the presence of air bubbles in your radiators. This prevents hot water from travelling freely and stops heat from being properly emitted. Feeling around the radiator will indicate whether this has happened. All you need is the radiator key to release the water, a cloth and a container to catch the water.

  1. Switch energy supplier

There are still millions of householders that have never switched energy supplier and they could be missing out on huge savings, possibly up to £300 annually. It’s much easier nowadays to change supplier and can be done by visiting one of the many different comparison sites that are on the internet. Submit your current gas and electricity usage and you’ll find loads of more affordable fixed-rate and variable energy packages.

Eden Windows has you covered for all your replacement window and door needs. Visit either of our showrooms to find window and door designs that will keep winter where it belongs, outside!
