Another day and yet another story about the high cost of energy for UK families. Research carried out has found that certain families are paying up to £330 per year more on their energy bills than families who consume the same amount of energy, incredible but true.
The IPPR think-tank estimates that there are at least 5.6 million people being affected by this huge problem which they say is occurring due to the larger energy companies out pricing their smaller counterparts, preventing them from gaining any sort of foothold in the energy market.
The new Energy and Climate Change Minister Ed Davey has pledged to do something about it, saying that the high price of energy bills is one of his top priorities. There is also pressure being put on by the Labour Party and the energy regulator Ofgem to ensure more fair play amongst suppliers.

Anyone who manages to get on the property ladder will only be too aware of how momentous an occasion it is when you first purchase a home. Those years of saving and working hard have finally paid off so should you should take tremendous pride in your household. This means continuously making sure that the exterior of your home offer tip-top aesthetics.

The rising levels of fuel poverty, energy prices and hypothermia has led to consumer experts uSwitch to campaign for VAT to be ditched from energy bills. The current rate of VAT on gas and electricity bills is 5%. uSwitch suggest that if VAT were to be scrapped then it would result in up to 250,000 households being taken out of fuel poverty and an overall drop in the cost of energy.
Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch, said: “Removing VAT from our energy bills would help to alleviate the growing financial pressure that consumers are coming under, enable many more to keep warm in the winter and snatch 250,000 households from the grip of fuel poverty.
“When added to the recent £34 price cut made by suppliers, the removal of VAT would see household energy bills tumble by almost £100 a year.
“I would urge the Government to consider this…
The dominance of large-scale energy companies such as British Gas, E.ON, Scottish Power has led to them being christened the Big Six. The vast majority of UK homeowners receive household energy from one of these companies at the moment, but could things be about to change?
uSwitch has discovered that 35,500 UK households switched to small energy companies e.g. Park Energy, Utilita, Green Energy UK, LoCO2 Energy , Co-operative Energy, amongst many others in the past month alone. Increased calls from consumer experts encouraging people to switch providers in order to save money are no doubt a key factor in this momentous swing.
Many of the people who have switched will have been extremely loyal to their energy supplier but reached a point where they simply cannot afford to stay with them and have found a better deal for themselves elsewhere.
However, the Big Six are beginning to fight…
